Shamlessly Using Your Kids to Win

Using your kids to win.  That just doesn’t seem right.  What is right, is making the hobby of contesting a family affair.  There are many ways kids can get involved in the hobby, winning prizes for themselves, such as a bike, or ones for the entire family, such as a trip.
In Canada there is a contest running right now called Ben’s Beginners Cooking Contest.  It’s open to Canadians who have a child 5-12.  To enter you must create a video of yourself with your child cooking a meal using Uncle Ben’s Rice (see video and judging requirements before you begin).  The prize is $10,000 for you and $20,000 for your child’s school!

This type of promotion might intimidate many, but I want to introduce you to Mason Partak.  Mason is the son of my friend Kathy Partak.  (You may remember Kathy as the creator of Intentional Winning.)  He not only enters and wins cooking contests, is a master chef in front of the camera, but he hosts them as well.  (No fear as he lives in the United States and won’t be able to enter the Uncle Ben’s contest.)

Here is a sample of Mason in the kitchen:

It is important to note that he is:

  1. being himself,
  2. he is comfortable with what he is cooking,
  3. already has most of the recipe pre-ready, similar to a chef on a television segment and
  4. the clip is edited for time.

Check out the rest of the videos on his blog, or YouTube channel to get more entry ideas to enter your own cooking contests.

Be sure to enter Mason’s current blog contest: It’s Giveaway Time! It’s a Candy Bouquet! Open to the United States.  Ends Friday March 15th 2013.  Various ways to garner entries.  (Many of his other giveaways are open worldwide, but this one is limited to the U,S, due to customs and International shipping charges.)

There are also kid friendly sites that host contests such as:

I couldn’t find similar resources in the U.S., but some of the sweepstakes sites feature sections with contests where kids are eligible to enter:

So, pull out your recipe books, grab your kid, set-up your video camera and start cooking!

Great article Carolyn! Mason is very comfortable in the kitchen and on camera – that is paramount! But also, he likes to win, and seeing me win encourages him to enter contests, too. Knowing how much fun it is to win, it was Mason’s idea to run contests himself. It pleases me to no end that not only does he like to receive, he finds joy in giving, too! Thanks for including Mason your article, and for the record, there is no shame in shamelessly using your kid to win! 😉
